I.M.A.’s residential summer music programs give participants access to top notch musical facilities and instruments, veteran professional musicians, and time with visiting artists. Most importantly they have plenty of time for musical exploration and collaboration with other musicians.
Each summer, beginning in the last week of June and running through the third week of August, IMA’s Rock the Summer offers five programs geared towards girls and young women aged 9-25. Two 5-day sessions of Explore Rock, for preteens, one of which is at the end of June and the other in mid-August. In July there are two 10-day sessions of the Teen Performance Program. In the beginning of August is the Recording program geared towards young women ages 16-25.
Explore Rock is for girls ages 9-12 who are interested in playing any form of popular music. The program offers opportunities to explore various instruments, to being to write songs and to participate in a short performance for family and friends.
The Performance Program is designed to give teen girls an opportunity to find and (literally) amplify their authentic voice using a “rock” band as the vehicle through which to gain confidence in performance abilities, to improve musicianship, and to develop collaborative leadership skills. Participants select original and cover tunes in any musical style to arrange, chart, and rehearse for performance at the end of the session.
In both programs, all girls participate in vocal, drum and percussion, and music theory classes and have access to private lessons and a wide range of instruments.
The Studio Recording, Engineering and Producing Program is for young women who want to get their recording chops together. Students will develop skills to work in a professional studio as well as improving their home studio techniques as they acquire recording and production basics in a hands-on, deeply creative, synergetic environment.
Fees include housing, meals, instruction, and access to instruments and gear. A maximum of 14 students per session.

Students will have the choice of sleeping inside the barn bunkhouse or outside in yurts (large round Mongolian-styled tents on a wooden platform). They will also have access to private bathrooms and showers, delicious (and nutritious) meals, an array of electric and acoustic instruments, and practice space.
